Hasankeyf at Tigris River

Hasankeyf

Hasankeyf is located at the Tigris River in Southeastern Anatolia in the Turkish province of Batman.
A fortress was built here by Byzantines in the 4th century. In the 7th cenury Arabs conquered the place. In the 12th century the city became a center under the reign of Turkish Artuklu (Artuqids). 1232 Arabic Ayubids controlled the city, in 1260 it was captured by the Mongols. Until the city became part of Ottoman Empire during the 16th century, it was under the reign of different Akkoyunlu and Ayubid leaders.

When I visited Hasankeyf in May 2006, I was fascinated by the view to the old city at the Tigris River and the beautiful minaret of the El-Rizk Mosque, built by Ayubids in the early 15th century.

Ruins remembers to the first bridge over the Tigris River, built in the 12th century. There are some nice old mosques, palaces and rocks houses in Hasankeyf. Maybe the historical buildings will be inundated, if the construction of a new Dam in the region is completed.
